Mark Solz – Walk Across America for ALS
San Diego, CA., February 26, 2016 — Mark Solz of San Diego, CA., will start a seven-month walk across the United States on Feb. 29, 2016, to raise money for ALS and Team Gleason.
Solz will be walking to honor his mother, Carol Wahl, who passed from ALS in 2010. “Walking is one of the earliest things we learn to do in life and it gives us our independence. When you see someone you love start to lose that ability it gives you a new appreciation for walking,” Solz explained. His goal is to raise $37,000 for Team Gleason – inspired by Gleason’s jersey number, 37, when he played for the New Orleans Saints.
New Orleans Saints Quarterback and Team Gleason supporter, Drew Brees will join Solz to kick off the walk. “When I heard Mark would be starting this epic journey from San Diego to honor his mother and also to support my good friend, Steve Gleason, I wanted to help bring attention to this walk and effort,” Brees said. “Steve always says ‘awesome ain’t easy’ and this walk won’t be easy, but it is awesome,” added Brees.
“I’m thrilled and humbled to have Drew join me to start the walk,” said Solz. “That he would take the time to join me shows the caliber of a person he is and how ALS has affected the Saints family,” Solz explained.
The walk will begin on Monday, February 29, 2016 at 8:30am at Petco Park on the corner of Park Boulevard and Tony Gwynn Drive in San Diego, CA. and end at Yankee Stadium in New York, NY. to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Lou Gehrig’s passing from ALS. Solz will need to average more than 30 miles per day to cover the more than 3,200 miles required to complete the trip.
In September 2015, Solz traveled to New Orleans, to meet with Steve Gleason and his organization, Team Gleason. “It’s amazing to have someone commit to such an intense adventure to bring more awareness to ALS and raise some much needed funds along the way,” said Paul Varisco, Team Gleason Executive Director.
Many thanks to Drew Shoe, who is the official shoe sponsor for Solzs’ walk.
